On Monday, I celebrated my 27th birthday! This was probably the first year that I didn’t cry on my birthday. I know that probably sounds weird, who get’s sad on their birthday? Well, usually me! I don’t dislike my birthday by any means, but getting older has always been really hard for me. I sobbed when I graduated college, cried for days when Carl and I first moved in together, was in tears when we got engaged, cried when we got married, I even lost a few tears when we sold our first house. I think you get the picture! All of these things mean that not only I’m getting older but my family is too.
With that being said, turning 27 has filled me with more gratitude than ever. Maybe that’s why this year’s birthday felt so different. Why be sad when I’m married to my best friend, living in a beautiful new home with our perfect dog! This year I spent my birthday with my mom, starting the day with massages and facials, followed by a delicious lunch and wine tasting. We finished the day at home with Carl & Dad, enjoying a steak dinner with asparagus and risotto cakes, wine, dessert, and each other’s company. I truly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day!
One thing I do every year whether I am sad about getting older or not is reflect on everything I have learned over the years! So here you go, 27 things I have learned in 27 years!
- It’s okay to not have it all figured out. Life is a about the journey, not a destination. Enjoy the journey while you can!
- The people you surround yourself with shape who you become. Choose who you spend your time with wisely. Notice how they make you feel.
- Self-care isn’t selfish. Prioritize your mental and physical health. This year I made the commitment to my wellness journey and I could not be more proud of myself!
- Failure is a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. Learn from your mistakes.
- Kindness costs nothing. A little kindness can go a long way. Maybe you grab the door for someone or pick something up that they dropped, it doesn’t need to be anything huge!
- Your worth is not determined by your accomplishments. Be proud of yourself. Never let someone else’s perception of your accomplishments dictate how you feel!
- The past is in the past. Don’t dwell on the past. Let go of regrets and focus on the present.
- Travel broadens the mind. Nothing inspires me more than seeing new places, learning about new cultures and taking in all of the beauty around me.
- Gratitude is a powerful tool. Focus on the positive no matter what.
- The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.
- It’s okay to say no. Don’t overcommit yourself and don’t do something you don’t love.
- Learn to listen actively. Pay attention to what others are saying. Never underestimate how active listening can impact your relationships.
- Practice mindfulness. Be present in the moment. Journal. Breathe.
- Don’t be afraid to take risks. Step outside of your comfort zone. I know I did this year when I quit my job! I have never been happier.
- Embrace change. Adapt to new situations and challenges. Every day is sure to bring some kind of challenge, learning to adapt makes that challenge a whole lot easier.
- The power of positive thinking. Your thoughts can shape your reality. If you think it, you really can do it!
- Don’t take things personally. Not everything is about you. Sometimes they are just having an off day.
- The importance of forgiveness. Let go of resentment and anger.
- The value of silence. Sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing. I am working on this and I am happy to say, I think I am getting better.
- The beauty of imperfection. Embrace your flaws. I’m not perfect, no body is perfect and that is what makes each of us so special.
- The importance of physical activity. Exercise regularly! I will make a difference. Regular exercise has helped to improve my anxiety so much.
- The power of a good night’s sleep. Prioritize rest! I recently got a new Apple watch and I am now really into my sleep data. Who knew learning to improve your sleep was so fun!
- The joy of learning. Never stop seeking knowledge. I think it is so important to challenge your mind! I learn through reading each day, taking workshops, writing & more!
- The importance of setting boundaries. Protect your energy. Don’t over work yourself. Figure out what is most important to you and set boundaries to protect that.
- The power of laughter. Humor can lighten even the darkest of days.
- The importance of giving back. Giving back can look different to everyone. It could be donating your time, contributing to a food drive, serving at a soup kitchen. No matter what it is, you’re making a difference.
- Love yourself. Self-love is the foundation of happiness. Love your journey.
